High hopes for DNA-based TB vaccine


AN EXPERIMENTAL DNA vaccine against tuberculosis speeds up recovery when given to mice alongside existing drug treatments. It also completely prevents relapse and greatly reduces the severity of the disease if the animals are reinfected. The vaccine, developed by Youngchul Sung’s team at Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea, contains several genes from the tuberculosis bacterium (Gene Therapy, DOI: 10.1038/sj.gt.3302465).
